Basketball is divided into four parts: offense, defense, transition offense, and transition defense. This blog will cover transition defense. The key terms are BASKET, BALL, NEXT, NAIL, AND TRAIL. Transition defense starts at the change of possession. At least three players are hitting the offensive boards, and one player is getting back. In transition defense, everyone is sprinting back and talking. The first person sprints back to the basket and calls "BASKET." This person is a one-person zone. The player is preventing any uncontested lay-ups and guarding anyone in the low post. After the basket is protected, the next person calls "BALL." A player needs to start playing the ball at half-court or at the top of the key. The main job of a player playing the ball is to get the ball out of the middle or to get the offensive guard to pick up their dribble. After the basket and ball are covered, the next call is "NEXT." "NEXT" may be an offensive player spotting up on the 3-point line or helping in the post. All players must talk. The goals of all defense are to stop the ball and prevent uncontested shots. "NAIL" is the call to defend the painter's dot or nail hole in the middle of the free throw line. If the ball is on the right side of the floor, there is no need to guard a person on the left side in the corner. Early help! All five players are playing the ball and talking. The last person is "TRAIL." The trail player has some choices. First, get in the lane and then find the ball. The next choice is to find the ball and an open player. Another choice would be to double team the ball or tip it from behind. Transition defense is a man defense with zone principles. If your team is playing man, the person you were assigned to guard may not be the same person you will guard in transition defense. The goals of transition defense are: 1. Get back; 2. Stop the ball; 3. Contest every shot; and 4. Talk, so all five players are playing the ball. Transition defense only works if all players get back and talk.
